Why is it essential to have a waterproof and breathable jacket?
How many fishing trips have been ruined because of cold and waterproofing problems? Whether it's autumn in a reservoir or spring in heavy showers, opt for perfect insulation. A waterproof and breathable jacket with a GoreTex waterproof membrane is ideal. It is important to know that this membrane imitates the skin.
By being perfectly insulated from the rain and wind, you will continue to fish while your comrades are already back. You can also add a garment underneath to bring youthermal comfort (inflatable vest for example because air is the best insulator), fleece or other synthetic material that can trap air in its fibers.
When is a jacket said to be waterproof?
Most brands will tell you that a fabric is waterproof at 3,000 mm or more, but the minimum Field and Fish can consider is 5,000 mm. The fabric is subjected to 5m of water pressure before a drop of water appears. The best performing jackets go up to 30,000 mm. These materials will also totally insulate you from the often unpleasant wind .
Should I choose a fabric with membrane or coating?
Coated fabric:
A layer of polyurethane is applied to the material with a squeegee to block the pores of the fabric. We end up with a fabric that is not very waterproof (around 3,000 mm) and is very breathable. Most cheapwaterproof jackets use a coating.
Fabric with Goretex type membrane:
The membrane is sandwiched and laminated between the outer fabric and the inner lining. This manufacturing process gives your waterproof garment lightness, strength and rigidity. We call this a 3/4/5 layer construction or 2.5 for very light waterproof jackets.
Uncompromising waterproofness (20,000mm) is breathability enough for sport fishermen. Many breathable waders use this process.
Why do 3/4/5 layer products cost more?
The construction of a 3-layer laminate garment is extremely precise and technical. Indeed, the goal being to ensure you an optimal protection against bad weather, every detail counts. The cutting of the fabric, the thermo-bonded bands on the seams, the technical hoods, the tightening points... All these manufacturing elements, specific to fabrics using a membrane, must be carried out with care to obtain a really technical garment. Therefore, it requires a higher investment than single or double layer coating.
