Pike on the fly

Pike fishing is becoming more and more popular with the appearance of more and more efficient equipment. We are going to give you some information to help you to approach this exciting fishing.

Why?

Because the pike is a beautiful and very aggressive fish. Seeing the pike come up on your fly and feeling the touch directly in your hands will leave an unforgettable memory.

Because the pike is a "big" and powerful fish and will fight epic battles on a rod as soft as a fly rod.

One reason is that pike are relatively common in our waters and it will be easy to practice near your home.

The latter is due to the fact that pike can be fished almost all year round.

How do you do it?

The power of your equipment will depend on the size of the flies you wish to cast. Knowing that the rule big fly, big fish applies very well for pike!

To start, we recommend the following set:
  • Cane #7/8
  • Reel # 7/8
  • Floating silk WF8F
  • An intermediate tip and a plunge tip (to vary the depth and animation of fishing)
  • 50m of backing
  • Leader: 2m of 40/100 + a tip in 70/100
  • Tie for big streamer. We recommend this model for its strength and ease of changing flies: https: //www.ardentflyfishing.com/rio-twist-clip-p-74619

Mastering the double pull will be essential to send your fly a minimum distance. Practice in your garden 😉

Flies:
  • " realistic ": natural colors
  • " Fantastic" : flashing colors
  • Surface flies: an imitation rat or frog will do the trick...

We advise you to use the first type of streamer before the second one in order not to "spook" fickle fish.

However, it is the second choice that will often prove to be the most productive.

When?

All season long. However, avoid the spawning season which usually runs from early February to late April.

Where?

Currently, many sectors are populated with pikes in France. Prefer shallow waters for fly fishing.

With whom?

There are many references to accompany you in fly fishing for pike but we prefer the Swedish Niklaus Bauer, specialist in the field.

His numerous videos will make your mouth water and help you in the practice and the fly tying.

You can find all his videos on youtube : https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=niklaus+bauer
