Which waders to choose?

Which fishing waders to choose?

You often ask us this question when choosing to buy field & fish waders. Before going back over the models we offer at field and fish, we'll take a look at the different wader solutions in all materials (PVC, breathable, with boots, without boots), so that you can find what you're looking for at your local retailer or on the internet.

Choose a PVC wader model:

PVC is a plastic material. PVC waders are often synonymous with a first purchase, as they are inexpensive and therefore of low quality in terms of the components used. They don't breathe, they're fragile, and they're often offered with boots that usually have slippery soles. Pvc waders are therefore used for limited purposes, such as launching a boat or fishing in the sea, where there are few obstacles.

Choose a model of Neoprene waders with boots or booties:

The neoprene used for wading is a foam injected between two meshes of fabric. The thicker it is, the warmer it will keep you, but it's not breathable and not very flexible, so it's best avoided if you're walking.

Neoprene waders are often used for wading fishing in cold weather and cold water at the start of the season. PVC and neoprene waders are also available in a waders version with boots.

Choose waterproof and breathable fishing waders:

Before going into the details of the different proposals (3, 4 or 5 layers), let's look at how most fishing waders are constructed.

First of all, we're talking about a Gore Tex-type membrane (imagine a membrane that takes on the characteristics of the skin) which is so thin that it has to be laminated between the fabric above and below. The more layers you have, the greater the resistance to thorns, but on the other hand, the waders will be less breathable and less comfortable to move around in.

That's why many manufacturers mix different materials.

Similarly, there is a plethora of textiles and membranes offering very different levels of waterproofing and breathability.

At Field and Fish, we have chosen to work with one of Japan's most renowned manufacturers of highly technical textiles. I often say that I can't afford to buy a low-end product, but rather that I want the best value for money. With the explanations given in this article, you'll be able to decide for yourself which waders will suit you best. Your choice of waders at Field and Fish will depend on the type of wading you're going to do. If you're looking for soft, breathable waders that combine fishing comfort with long walks, choose the ultra sonic waders, cut from a 4-layer fabric with excellent abrasion resistance.

For those who spend long hours in the water and are looking for crowded spots far from the beaten track, the expert model is preferable, thanks to its 5-layer fabric, which is less breathable. In terms of durability, these two products will give you the same level of satisfaction. Both products can be transformed into pants by means of an ingenious suspender system.

Our sizes are primarily designed for French customers. If you can't find what you're looking for in our range of sizes, we can make you a custom 4 or 5-layer wader. We are the only company in Europe to offer this service.

Another important point:

What to wear under your waders?

For maximum comfort under our waders, we recommend that you wear breathable, stretch fabrics. Depending on the season and water temperature, you can opt for a fleece-type undergarment and, in summer, light stretch pants, but above all no jeans. We won't go into the details of our competitors, knowing that you'll be able to appreciate the technical points we feel are essential to offering a quality product that will last over time once you've read the following:

First of all, we attach great importance to the choice of materials for our waders:

  • A Japanese fabric from ASF in 4 and 5 layers, which is the best fabric in the world

  • Zips and accessories YKK a recognized brand of the highest quality

  • A 3M protective strip for Neoprene booties

Waders are built to our specifications. For your information, after manufacture, each Wader is immersed in a swimming pool and filled with air to ensure a perfect seal.

On our 4 and 5-layer Waders:

-> There's no need for a central zip, because our brace system makes it easy to put on the Waders and roll them up into pants for your comfort.

-> Double inner sealing strips on main seams and crotch reinforcement ( 5c).

-> Reinforced liner with all-round 3M gray band and underfoot armored neoprene.

-> Removable waterproof inside pocket.

-> A waterproof outside pocket.

-> Both are supplied with mat and wide belt.

-> There are virtually no seams, and most are positioned at the back.

  1. I've just done my first outing with Michelin-soled shoes. Very good grip and perfect ankle support. I already had the same fastening system, which is top-notch. I've had the sonic waders for 1 year now, so far no worries . conclusion very good product .

  2. Hello
    When I fish for trout I walk a lot to and from the lake. I admit I haven't found wadders and shoes that suit me, maybe a solution: a waterproof backpack with a checks pack to put the wadders in to get back to the car.
    Have a nice day

    1. me too, which is why I designed the sonic waders with light shoes (and soon ulta light with Michelin soles).
